Absolutely one of the finer portraits of this beloved character. What I like most is the outlining that separates the hair from the background--brilliant use of line. The colors wash over his face building layers like the brushstrokes of Old Masters. The features of his face draw us in: the eyes are invitingly hypnotic and the lips pursed.
Intricate details abound, particularly in the medallion with its fiery-hued stone. His suit coat, because there appears to be that layered wash over it, seems as if made of crushed velvet. It is the lavender tones of the background, however, which set the atmosphere of the study by breaking the light in slivers of varied shades. These "shades fall upon the crown of his head, shadow his face, and embrace the folds of his ascot. An exceptionally beautiful portrait of Mr. Depp's Barnabas.
